Martial Arts: A boon to heighten your abilities
Martial Arts: A Boon to heighten your abilities
Being fit is important to lead a happy life and now-a-days people are very well aware of its benefits. In order to get fit we are hitting gym and adopting so many kinds of fitness programs and even altering our diet. But I observe only few people chose martial arts.
I say choosing martial arts not only makes you fit but also increase your intellectuality and boosts confidence.
What kind of benefits we can achieve by learning Martial arts other than fitness….
Once I was taking with my father’s friend and he was telling about his 12 year old son how is overweight for his age and He says he wants his son to be active and fit. I suggested him to try to enroll his son for a martial arts class. His replay is – ‘Martial arts increases violent thoughts and he will end up becoming a rowdy or street fighting’. I was really surprised by his replay. Not just he so many people think Martial arts are nothing but violence. Here I want to discuss about what martial arts really are…
Have you ever wondered about the term “Martial Arts” which is so popular?
Before discussing anything about martial arts first we get clear about the term. Breaking the term Martial and Art, Martial refers to Roman god of war Mars and art refers to skills. So the term just refer to war or fighting.
I read somewhere that the term Martial art was first used by the Europeans referring to fencing. Fencing is also known as gentlemen’s game.
Slowly the term was used in central Asia and other countries.
Here I want to ask you a question - Do street fighting is also a martial art?
May be, if we go by the name as discussed above. But, let me tell you how you can differentiate a street fight from a Martial art.
“Martial Art is much more than fighting skills”
There are many different types of Martial arts which are practiced around the world each one have an unique style and techniques. And you can observe that there is in-built discipline, rules, gentleness and more importantly a Philosophy.
“Martial art without Philosophy is nothing but a street fight”
Martial art is not just for self-defense, it actually helps a person to lead a happy and successful life if he can get the actual Philosophy behind the art.
“Although most people consider martial arts to be a fighting system there is always more than fighting skills”.
When you begin martial arts training you are about to embark upon perhaps the biggest mental and spiritual changes of your life, it is inevitable.
Let us discuss how practicing martial arts effects our life style, later on we can discuss about its effects on our spiritual wellness -
As you are going to practice different types of movements and try to balance and stretch your body as far as you can, your mind focus completely on your body movements thereby increasing the concentration and patience. Practicing regularly day after day year after year makes you self-disciplined and when we see the tremendous results your training gives you makes you confident, which then becomes much easier to acquire the will power you need to overcome personal obstacles.
For example when a child starts practicing martial arts, every day he was given some kind of task in martial arts class, to achieve that he tries harder and harder by listening to the instructor and following him, practicing for several hours. In this course he becomes emotionally mature and learns to overcome pain and focuses on the end results thereby begin to take pride in the results that he witnessing himself. He also learns how to carry himself in front of a crowd or a group of people and also gets an idea about team co-ordination which are important leadership skills.
As he practices this strategy and try to adopt in everyday life, in achieving goals whether in martial arts class or at school or at a job he will be successful. This gives positive patterns to follow thus a sense of security, because these pattern basically never change.
“Martial arts themselves are a process by which you set goals and learn how to achieve them”.
In a martial arts class we can see the pupils following military discipline and they are asked to address the seniors and masters with a definite designation as in a military system. Which in turns helps the students to develop respect towards the elders and lead a disciplined life in day to day life.
One of the greatest advantages of martial arts training will be the sharpening of your mind caused by heightened concentration and sensory awareness.
With your regular training, you will begin to know your body well – everything from turning it into self-defense weapon to increased vitality and good health. You will also develops a spiritual awareness and the spirit is the life force of our very being.
Many instructors believe that the amazing benefits of martial arts can cure some of the society’s ills, especially the problems plaguing our youth today- depression, anxiety, obesity, heart diseases etc., are some of them to name.
All I can say is mind and spirit will be learning to work together harmoniously to bring about the necessary changes to make you a more complete human being.
